Annandale has a new massage school.

The Alpha School of Massage is located in an office building at 7700 Little River Turnpike.

Anyone interested in becoming a massage therapist – plus everyone else in the community – is invited to an open house on Jan. 10, 3:30-6:30 p.m.

The first class will start on Feb. 3, says Mykenzie Francis, compliance specialist with the Alpha School of Massage and Alpha Anywhere.

A student clinic, offering low-cost massages for the public – starting at $40 for a basic one-hour relaxation massage – will launch in March.

A full-time student can complete the program in 20 weeks. For a part-time student, it can take as little as 28 weeks. All students will attend classes Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. After that, part-time students attend classes three days a week.

Graduates will be prepared to take the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx), which they need to pass to earn a state license. States also require a certain number of hands-on hours.

Alpha students will spend the first three weeks of the program learning full-body Swedish massage routines with their instructor and class. It’s very hands-on, “like a massage bootcamp,” Francis says. They will then learn other techniques, including hot stone massage, sports massage, chair massage, and deep tissue massage.

After that, they will work with customers, practicing what they’ve learned in the student clinic.

The classes will also cover anatomy, physiology, massage theory, business, laws, ethics, and safe practice of massage therapy, Francis says. “They get lots of practice at Alpha and will be ready to work as soon as they receive their license.”

Alpha School of Massage was launched in Florida over 30 years ago. There are five locations in Florida, one in George, and one in Delaware.
