New Member - Reflexology Course Query

Hi Everyone!

I am currently trying to find a good Distance Learning Reflexology Course - there are quite a few places, all offering a different qualification at the end of the course - my head is spinning with trying to decide which course will be the best! Can anyone recommend an excellent place? All suggestions very much appreciated!!

This has been discussed alot on these threads, and I think the concensus is that a hands-on therapy, such as reflexology, is not recommended for distance learning - unless the training school can offer plenty of 'practical' work. Is there nothing available in a FE college in your area?

Unfortunatley, I live in Wales, so providers are far & few between! The nearest University only offers a BSC in Alternative Medicine - which doesn't include Reflexology!

I have come across a place called Kevala (based nr Cardiff) - have you heard of it? They hold a number of Practical Tutorials throughout the year and require students of Reflexology to undertake a number of cases as part of their studies. This kind of course seems to be on the right lines, I think! One of my main concern is ensuring that the qualification I gain at the end of the course is a 'proper' one, if that makes sense?

I wasn't thinking university, more local further education college, where you could take a part-time course, and learn with other people doing hands-on training. My 'problem' with distance learning, is that the theoretical part may be sound, but how can you be taught pressures, and the 'feel' of tissue/sinew etc on different individuals - I can't understand how you can be expected to provide case study work, without knowing how to apply the correct pressures. I was treated by a person who had done a home study course in aromatherapy (back a few years now) - but I didn't know, as the certification which covered one wall of the therapy room looked very credible. I asked her to stop after about 20 minutes - it was painful, and she obviously had no idea what she was doing. Have you done any A&P yet? Perhaps start with that, as distance training, which will give you time to consider your options for further training.

Just to let you know, I did a long distance learning course in Aromatherapy Massage, as at the time was a lot easier for me as I could learn at my own pace, it was about two years ago now. I passed with flying colours and was awarded my diploma. Only trouble is I havent a clue how to do a massage and I am not anywhere near qualified enough to go near a paying client. These courses are ok for topping up qualifications etc. But im my opinion they are not sutible for studying a stand alone therapy. There are many colleges and night classes that i'm sure run Reflexology. Please make sure they run for long enough though (some offer 6 weeks this is no where near enough even though it is advertised as a full course) and include Anatomy and Physiology. Hope this helps with your decision. x

I agree with the others, if you search the forums there is a lot of talk about distance learning courses, how well they serve their students in terms of support and experience. Whilst some do ok, most tell another story. Many of those who do these courses struggle to get insurance from anyone but the obscure associations linked to these colleges and lack confidence to treat clients, often forking out for a hands on course later.

Nothing beats the guidance of a decent tutor. Even if you have to drive and complete a course further from home, you may find that you're a lot more confident.

I have decided to look for a course run by the Association of Reflexologists, so that I know it's a 'proper' course & qualification - and one that is NOT distance learning!

As Serendipity pointed out - there are short courses about, but I really want to undetake one that gives me lots of practical practise, so that I feel confident in working with clients. After all, that is the point in wanting to do the course, to help people..... The courses run in relation with the AoR tend to be of a good duration, therefore are not of a 'quick fix' solution.

Hope you find what you are looking for. If I remember correctly, there used to be a place in Caernarfon that ran some courses but can't remember the name of it. Depends which end of North Wales you are. (I know it quite well as used to live there too)! If you're not in a hurry to qualify, you could see what the local colleges offer, though they tend to be VTCT courses. VTCT is well respected though so is always an option if you struggle with AOR one's.

I know where you mean, I have come across them before (can't think of their name off the top of my head, like you)!. They are a good hour's drive away, so I have hesitated in the past about choosing a course there (they are AoR courses). However, I have been on their website again in the last couple of days, but it looks like they are not running general Reflexology courses this year, but specifically focusing on cancer care courses for practitioners already working. Many thanks for the suggestion tho Treacle, really appreciated!

You'll do well with an AoR course, they are very thorough and you'll come out a confident reflexologist.
