On my first trip to San Jose I didn't leave the Del Rey and paid cien plus a $20.00 tip. Cheap by US standards.

This trip I am going to ZB, I, NF, etc. What is the expected tip for a very good experience? Do you use colones or US dollars?

I usually tip the equivalent of about $10 in dollars or colones. Some tip more, but I think is is adequate for a hour of fun.

Guess I really am back.
Remember it is not a tipping culture so it should be resrved for great or special service.
I had 2 Zona ladies trained for exceptional bbbjcim and always gave them a 10/12 dollar tip and give them something from the states that I knew they would like (not every visit but every trip).
Other guys may feel differently but you should not give them a propina just because thay are good BCD......that is their job.

My opinion is that $10 roughly equates to what we consider 15% in the us...

and 20 for 20%...


i.e. if she were a waitress in the US, and she provided average, you'd give 15%, exceptional 20%, poor 10%...

so... $20 exceptional
$10 average
less than 10 for below average

I have tipped as high as $50 for an exceptional TLN with someone whom I would have "dated" in the US.

but that's just my 20 colones worth (inflation, 2 colones just doesn't buy what it used to).

Sorry, I will tip a waiter/waitress. A taxi driver? Definitly not. A bellman? If he actually made sure things worked in the room, yes, otherwise no. I hate the ones that walk in with your bag, toss it on the bed and walk out. Then it turns out the shower is broken, the tv doesnt turn on, and the safe is closed shut.

Point being, its a country where tips are not expected. I dont believe in going beyond the call of duty just to have someone do a shitty job and think they should be rewarded for it.

The cleaning ladies in CR have been the worst I have ever seen anywheres. If anything they should pay me money to not make them lose their job

I dont get it. Whats your motive for tipping? If you feel the need to throw around money that no one in that country throws around, then by all means go for it. Im not saying not to.

I just dont believe in tipping on something that is half ass, or already paid for.

Its the exact same as here. Their's no right or wrong. Its at your discretion. If you feel the service was good, awesome, by all means give the person a tip.

Its your money. Do what you want with yours, and Ill do what I want with mine.

When in Costa Rica [or anywhere for that matter] I always tip generously; the maids, the chicas, the waiters, the desk clerks, etc., etc. It really doesn't amount to much when you look at the big picture. What is an extra $300 when I'm already spending about $5000 for a one month stay? I know, I know......the old arguments.....it's not a tipping culture, the tip's included in the bill.... blah, blah, blah. Nevertheless.....because we are Americans, they still expect it from us. I am fortunate to have the financial resources to visit CR on a regular basis, and I will not begrudge a few dollars to people who are obviously less fortunate than me. I firmly believe that I am repaid 10 fold. I am happily greeted by everyone when I return......and if they're happy, it makes me feel happy.
