Two important things I didn't cover, and I only do this because I don't think it has been covered before:

Don't wear the "gringo uniform" in Costa Rica. You know, the shorts, the non-humorous t-shirt, maybe sandals or tennie shoes with ankle high white socks that screams to all ticos , ticas, and muggers from as far as 200 yards/meters that you are a rich American tourist by Costa Rica standards and you want everyone to know, because America is the greatest nation on earth., and you want them to mug you, or steal your money by deceit or false love.

The people in Costa Rica are just going to think your an idiot especially if your a hyperactive 70 year old who is acting like someone half his age. They of course won't tell you anything, as the Costa Rican people are too polite, but behind your back they are going to be laughing their ass off. Even if the US you can't wear shorts to court houses, as it's almost a sign of disrespect, and in places like Mexico and Costa Rica men in the cities just don't go around with shorts no matter how hot it is.

Now in Jaco beach and other heavy tourist areas its find to wear your shorts , sandals , or hiking boots because it's practical and besides you'll be with a bunch of other tourists from the US and other countries that have on the same thing.

I say the same thing in TJ that you shouldn't wear shorts in TJ if you want to blend in, but at the same time I say the hell with it, if your not scared of the TJ cops and guys with chokeholds from behind, just wear what you want, but keep in mind you're telling everyone you are a tourist.

Now some people will argue and say that some locals in Costa Rica or Mexico do wear shorts, and I do see that sometimes, especially outside the main cities, but I don't see it it too often in the downtown areas of most cities.

The second topic I haven't seen covered is 'can you travel to Costa Rica without knowing Spanish? And I think the answer is yes. Costa Rica is very similar to Tijuana and resort cites like Cancun, where in the capital, and the tourist places English is widely spoken, especially in the hotels, and tourist areas you want to visit. I was shocked to see many Colombian chicas speak English to English speaking mongers from the US and elsewhere, even the other girls spoke some English too, but who needs to talks when you are there to fuck the girls?

Now it seemed like most of the cab drivers, and shuttle drivers didn't speak English or it was very limited, and in the restaurants, even the higher end ones very limited English was spoken, but the menus were in English so I guess you can always point to what you want, and I had a feeling they at least understood English if they didn't speak it? But if you stick to the hotel restaurants you'll have no trouble at all, as they always speak English in hotel restaurants.

I went to New Fantasy on my last morning before my flight back to the US and was sadly disappointed with the selection. So I walked over to Zona Blue and there was one possibility but a gringo appeared out of nowhere and grabbed her as she walked into the little bar area. Those other sites just rave about these places and I didn't see it on my visits. So I went back to the HDR and grabbed a chica from the lobby bar. Your reports have been great FB. I agree with most of what you've said. Renting a car in Costa Rica anywhere outside San Jose is OK. It is a great way to see the out of the way places at your own pace. Just make sure to get a 4x4 (but not a big SUV because many roads and bridges are narrow. I had a Rav 4 which was the perfect size). The country is quite small, but the poor roads mean that it can take all damn day to across the country. I use the local airlines (Nature Air, Sansa) that have 12-seater Cessnas that can get you to many towns in 30 minutes from Liberia or San Jose.

The Northern Pacific coast is great. It is not monger territory so you must bring your own.

What is funny about Tamarindo was there were several Mexican restaurants. They aren't as good as Mexican Mexican or TexMex places, but it beats Gallo Pinto at every meal. I also ran into several Italian places. I ate dinner on US Thanksgiving at an Italian restaurant in Montezuma that was owned by Italians.

And Imperial Beer isn't nearly as bad as you make it sound. Especially in Jaco where it is about 1000f with 100% humidity. A cold Imperial is what the doctor ordered. Also, Heineken is pretty prevalent and Corona can be found too.

So let me review some of the things I talked about. San Jose the capital on Costa Rica, is fucked up, it's an ugly dirty little city, that's there is not much to do in except monger. The thing about San Jose is it;s the middle part of Costa Rica, and many people use it as a center to travel to other points. If you go to just monger, your largely going to be stuck in old two star hotels at best, as those hotels are the only ones chica friendly, the 4 and 5 stars hotels will discourage or out right ban hookers in their hotels. Besides there really aren't 5 star hotels in the city, but some claim they are. The U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica doesn't even allow any of its guest to stay in Costa Rica, but books them in surrounding outside cities where it's not crime ridden. US State Department and I'm not the only one who calls San Jose fucked up, everybody but mongers say it's dirty and doesn't have many attractions, the travel books, and many things written on the Internet say the same thing. Mongers like it because of the hookers, bars, and MPs it has, so in a sense we mongers, are no different from drug deals, pimps, and hoes who find seedy red-light districts beautiful.

If you think Tijuana is dangerous, well so is Costa Rica, it doesn't have the drug lords that Tijuana has, but in TJ we don't deal with drug lords, but Costa Rica has many of the same lower level crimes TJ has, and Costa Rica has bums asking for money like TJ, except I noticed more mentally ill street people in San Jose, than I do in TJ. At night San Jose, is right out of Will Smith's latest movie "Im am Legend" as some of the night people don't look human, no wonder why they tell you to take a cab at night, and then you have the cab driver not turning on the 'maria"( meter) because he wants to charge you a few dollars for two blocks.

The cars are dangerous in Costa Rica, according to reports Costa Rica has one of the highest accident rates in the world, as they don't care about street lights and stop signs. In Costa Rica, pedestrians are called targets! I would never rent a car in Costa Rica, with no most streets not having street signs or addresses on buildings.


Even the bees in Costa Rica are deadly, as just about all the bees in Costa Rica have been Africanized and ready to kill!

But I liked Costa Rica, and would do it again, but maybe stay in the upper pacific coast region where they really do have 5 star hotels and clean white sandy beaches, and maybe take my women, and wouldn't monger.
But if I just mongered I'd stay in San Jose, but at least I would take maybe one trip to some place like Monte Verde to relax and breath fresh air, better yet take a bar chica from the 'Blue Marlin' with you to a Costa Rica resort and I'm sure that would be fun. ( I had bronchitis for a month and could not get rid of it, even in San Jose I was coughing, but once in Jaco and later the mountains, it cleared right up, just what the doctor ordered)

When I left Costa Rica I wanted a few things that I missed in the states or TJ. I wanted a good hamburger, and pizza with lots of cheese. In Costa Rica they put a little bit of cheese on their pizza, it's just not that good.
I also wanted some good Mexican food with some real Mexican beans and rice, fuck gallo pinto! I can't wait to get back to TJ, drink a Mexican beer, listen to Mexican music, and fuck a Mexican chica.....life is good.

I went to Costa Rica twice last year primarily for non-mongering purposes but had a taste of action there. As luck would have it, my flights from the US land after dark and the local 12-seater airlines don't fly to the good non-monger spots after dark so I'd be "stuck" in San Jose overnight. The rain forests and the wildlife there is very cool. The beaches are great and not built up. I'm definitely going back for that. Well after New Fantasy I did check out Zona Blue, Idem gringo friendly MPs, and other places, but I wanted to check out the casino, and of course the famous " Blue Marlin." I made 19 trips to Costa Rica between 1997 and 2000. It used to be a fun place but unfortuately the ugly Americans all but destroyed it. We created a fantasy cartoon character named "Tony Lama Butch" based on many of the idiots whom you will meet in the Blue Marlin bar.

I hope my report isn't discouraging you from visiting Costa Rica? What I wanted to do was talk about things that are never talked about, like indifferent service, food quality, taste of beer, shit hole capital...etc etc. Stuff like this and especially police corruption is talked about in great detail about Tijuana. What I wanted to do is point out that Costa Rica has many of the same problems, and just about everybody tells you not to walk around along at night, and just take a cab even going a few blocks. But Costa Rica also had many good qualities, and I'll talk more about it in my final post.

Costa Rica has many Spanish schools, that they combine with sight seeing, and if anybody wants to learn it's a great place to learn, but just remember in Costa Rica, they like to use the word, 'mucho gusto' a lot when you thank them for something, the equivalent to our English word' your welcome.' In Mexico and the states, you say mucho gusto when you meet someone new and shake their hand. There were a few other words too that were used differently, but the most common was mucho gusto, after you thanked them for finally bringing you another beer. ( in Mexico they usually say "de nada" for your welcome.)

Lets finish this up, I could have did this in one page. My last night in Costa Rica, I said to myself I just have to get me some pussy. It's been two trips now, and 11 days, and I had not had a girl that I didn't bring with me.
