what reading material do you keep in your waiting room?

so... i would like to know what type of reading material you keep in your waiting room. books, mags, brochures... (anyone showing educational videos?)
obviously, what we have out on the table has a lot to say about us, so why did you choose this material?
are there any "must-haves" for the waiting room?
i am also interested what your clients think of your reading material, if they notice or comment on it.

The spa where I work has quite a bit of reading material in our upper lounge area. Including but not limited to Travel & Leisure, Mens Health, O, Real Simple, etc.

But the thing I honestly seeing them look at the most is an "art" book that I bought as a gift for the Spa owner last January. It was full of interviews about the techniques used by a specific artist. How she is inspired by what she sees and the techniques she uses to create her work. It's nice because it's mostly pictures and clients don't have to get involved in reading an article only to suddenly be called to go into their appointment. Such coffee table books can be a nice source of artwork as well.

Hi. We have a subscription to Body & Soul (love it!) and keep our past issues in the waiting area. People tend to pick this up before any of the other literature we have. We decided not to carry any pop mags (Redbook, People...) due to the fact that there always seem to be pharmaceutical ads in them. We tend to steer clear of that if at all possible. I would love to hear of any other mags that you all recommend.

I have Prevention, readers Digest, & Avon books. Usually my clients are not sitting long enough to be able to read, as I am a one woman operation. Sometimes, though, 2 will come in at once, and one will read while the other is getting a massage. I chose Prevention because I love it myself, lot of good info. I grew up with Readers Digest, so thats close to my heart :} Im an Avon lady, thus the books!

I know I had clients come early to read the Milwaukee paper I would pick up every morning. I subscribe to Entertainment weekly and a news mag called The Week. Magazines that just come to my office (dont ask me how or why) is ebony, field and stream .car and driver. time, reader's digest and muscle and fitness. Oh and the Highlight magazine, love the hidden pictures page.

Right now I have some coffee table books (scenery), Golf, Gormet (cooking), an AARP or two, one Highlights (for the rare person who has a child with them) and I think a "motorcycle" magazine. For some reason I am on a magazine mailing list for the waiting room (don't pay for them) and they change periodically. A few months ago I was getting Good Housekeeping, Sunset and Better Homes & Gardens.

If I were to actually be purchasing magazines for the office, I'd go with Real Simple, National Geo Adventure, a cooking/gardening/or places to eat in my city-magazine and maybe one other that would be "green-ish".

Agreed on the info about clients not sitting long enough to really read something. But, I regularly encourage clients to take a magazine with them if they see something they are interested in.

Also, I have one client who is learning to golf and she gets all the golf magazines each time she comes in (about once every 3 months or so).

I have Body Sense and Well Being Journal, along with a misc variety, such as homestead or yoga magazines. I also keep several copies of my newsletters in the pile

I like to stay away from sports, fashion, and mainstream news, as I find them untrustworthy and they only perpetuate the very myths I'm trying to expose.

MORE, I've had people tell me they subscribe to it after seeing it in the waiting area. It is for people 40+ although the 30 somethings enjoy it as well. Psycology Today from our counselor and Prevention when they send me a free one.

My ideal waiting room is filled with masks, paintings, art objects, that are slightly terrifying(something akin to the entrance to the Temple at Nara, Japan) plus candles/incense and perhaps something like a Bach dirge orthe Sorcereers Apprentice as background. No reading material .

The massage room itself is empty, except for the massage table.

Lately none of this is true....

i've got body + soul, home, real simple and i also have a really great book called 1000 facts on the body. it's a hard cover book that gives facts on all kinds of stuff about the human body. it's really cool. i'll have other random mag's on the table at different times depending what looked good on the shelf.

one to three related magazines and maybe one food and home magazine should be a great balance. I am in Australia and we have different magazines here, and I have been on a break from massage for 3/4 year now. But I would choose 'complementary therapies, 'wellbeing' 'better homes and gardens'.
