So I guess the 'right' approach then is to just ask for a massage at the counter (I am always baffled by the many options, do speak some Chinese but not fluent, never understood difference between HK massage, Taiwan massage, oil massage etc, so usually just go for the latter), and then in the room before the massage starts negotiate with the girl, just to avoid thinking with your little head...

If we're talking about the barbershops, neverpay Y200 for massage with happy ending. This is ridiculously high. Insist on paying Y100. Insist beforehand that it includes not just the 'massage' but the HE. If, after one or two minutes of 'massage' she violently grabs your crotch like a lorry driver would grab a gear lever and says "HE for Y200 ok", say you want to leave. The Y100 will quickly be adhered to.

The "massage" consists of a 5 minute (if you're lucky) half-hearted shoulder rub while she's unzipping your fly. The purpose of the "massage" is (in my opinion) just so the girl can justify to herself that the main objective of her work isn't in fact to give a hand job.
